The Punisher is back! After returning in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Frank Castle is set to headline his own Marvel Television Special Presentation, The Punisher: One Last Kill, premiering May 12 on Disney+.

Played by Jon Bernthal, Frank remains one of Marvel’s darkest and most controversial street-level characters. Unlike traditional heroes, The Punisher does not believe in second chances—his war on crime is brutal, permanent, and deeply personal.

Originally introduced in Daredevil Season 2 before leading his own Netflix spin-off, The Punisher became one of the defining characters of Marvel’s street-level era.

Before One Last Kill arrives, here’s everything you need to know about The Punisher.

Frank Castle Before Becoming The Punisher

Before he became one of Marvel’s most feared vigilantes, Frank Castle was a decorated Marine and family man living in New York.

His life changed completely when his wife and two children were killed during what initially appeared to be a gang-related shooting in Central Park. Their deaths pushed Frank into a violent mission of revenge, leading him to become The Punisher—a one-man war against organized crime.

However, the truth behind his family’s murder was far more complicated. Frank eventually learned that their deaths were connected to a larger military conspiracy involving corruption inside the U.S. armed forces and covert government operations tied to his own past. That revelation made his mission even more personal.

The Origin of The Punisher in Daredevil

Frank Castle made his MCU debut in Daredevil Season 2, where he immediately became one of the show’s most compelling characters. While Matt Murdock believed in justice through the legal system, Frank believed criminals needed permanent punishment. Their ideological conflict became one of the defining parts of the season, especially during their now-iconic rooftop confrontation.

After Frank was arrested and put on trial, Karen Page helped uncover the people responsible for orchestrating his family’s deaths. Among them was Major Ray Schoonover, Frank’s former commanding officer, who had secretly been operating as a drug trafficker known as The Blacksmith.

Frank escaped prison, faked his death, and killed Schoonover, fully embracing his identity as The Punisher. Before disappearing, he also discovered evidence connected to “Micro,” which would lead directly into his solo series.

Frank Castle’s Journey in The Punisher

Netflix’s The Punisher premiered in 2017 and expanded Frank’s story beyond simple revenge. Season 1 revealed Frank’s connection to Project Cerberus, an illegal covert military operation tied to heroin trafficking and corruption inside the CIA. It also introduced Micro, a former NSA analyst who had been framed after trying to expose the truth.

The two formed an uneasy alliance while Frank also came face to face with Billy Russo, his former best friend and military brother, who had betrayed him. Billy would eventually become Jigsaw, one of Frank’s most personal enemies.

Season 2 took a more personal approach, with Frank protecting a young girl named Amy Bendix while dealing with Billy’s return and desire for revenge. Their conflict ended with Frank killing Billy for good.

By the end of the series, Frank fully accepted that his war would never truly end. The final scene showed him once again taking down criminals—proving that The Punisher was still very much active.

His return in Daredevil: Born Again

After six years away, Frank Castle finally returned in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. Matt Murdock sought him out while investigating the death of White Tiger, questioning whether Frank was involved.

Their reunion quickly reminded audiences why their dynamic works so well: Daredevil still fights for justice, while Frank still believes violence is the only real answer. Frank later played a major role in helping Matt survive an attack from Mayor Wilson Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force.

One of the most interesting developments was the way corrupt police officers had started using The Punisher’s skull symbol for themselves. Frank strongly rejected that idea, making it clear they did not represent him.

By the end of the season, Frank was captured and imprisoned in Fisk’s illegal prison—but the post-credits scene revealed that he escaped. Although he did not appear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, the series made it clear that Frank was still out there.

What to Expect From The Punisher: One Last Kill

The next chapter arrives with The Punisher: One Last Kill, Marvel Television’s new Special Presentation debuting May 12 on Disney+. The project is expected to bridge the gap between Frank’s escape in Born Again Season 1 and his future appearances in the MCU.

According to early details, Frank will be trying to live a life without revenge—something that has never truly been possible for him. That suggests the special may explore whether The Punisher can exist without violence, or whether Frank Castle is permanently trapped by the identity he created.

The special also arrives ahead of his confirmed appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, making it clear that Marvel has bigger plans for Frank moving forward.
