Bette Midler has been cast as Fairy Godmother in Netflix’s new reimagining of the classic Cinderella story, Steps. She joins a voice cast that includes Amanda Seyfried, Ali Wong, and Stephanie Hsu.
The logline of the movie is as follows: Sick of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith (Wong) steals the Fairy Godmother (Midler)’s magic wand and hijacks the Royal Ball with her sister Margot (Hsu), breaking the Cinderella story as we know it and dooming the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of Priscilla, a villainous schemer who swoops in and snatches the throne. Lilith must team up with Cinderella (Seyfried) to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.
Midler, best known for playing Winifred “Winnie” Sanderson in Hocus Pocus, shared her excitement about joining the project in a statement:
“The beloved Fairy Godmother, the wholesome Fairy Godmother, the one with all the good intentions, has been around for a long, long time. This particular version of the Fairy Godmother has good intentions, but she’s a little bit of a bumbler and she’s a little bit of a schemer. I’m thrilled to be part of this film, and I’m thrilled to be with this cast!”
To celebrate Midler’s casting, Netflix also released two new stills from the film.

A work-in-progress session for Steps will take place on Tuesday, June 23, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Directors Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, art director Dan Casey, and head of character animation Jason Figliozzi will discuss the film’s creative development. The movie is produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, Kim Lessing, and Paper Kite Productions.
Steps is set to premiere on Netflix later this year.
