Enola Holmes returns for another mystery. Premiering on Netflix on July 1, the third installment follows the young detective to Malta, where what should be a joyful new chapter in her life quickly turns into her most dangerous investigation yet.

Before watching the new film, here’s a refresher on the key events from the second installment.

Who is Enola Holmes?

Enola Holmes is the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes. Intelligent, resourceful, and determined to forge her own path, she refuses to follow the expectations Victorian society has for young women.

Throughout the first two films, Enola proves herself to be a talented detective in her own right, solving complex cases while building a reputation independent of her famous brother.

What happened in Enola Holmes 2?

After opening her own detective agency, Enola takes on her first official case when she’s hired to find a missing factory worker named Sarah Chapman.

As she investigates, she uncovers a conspiracy inside a London matchstick factory, where workers are being poisoned after changes to the factory’s chemical formula. At the same time, Sherlock is investigating a financial blackmail scheme, and the siblings eventually discover that their cases are connected.

How did Enola Holmes 2 end?

Enola and Sherlock expose the conspiracy during a confrontation at the Paragon Theatre. They discover that Mira Troy, the Treasury Minister’s secretary, is secretly behind the scheme. Serving as the franchise’s version of Moriarty, she orchestrated the blackmail and murders to gain control of the match monopoly. Although the Holmes siblings stop the conspiracy, Mira manages to escape during the chaos, leaving her fate unresolved.

Meanwhile, Enola learns that Sarah Chapman was never simply hiding. Disguised throughout the investigation, Sarah had been leading the matchgirls’ strike as they fought for justice.

After solving the case, Sherlock invites Enola to become his investigative partner. While grateful for the offer, she decides to continue building her own career as an independent detective.

Where do Enola and Tewkesbury leave off?

By the end of Enola Holmes 2, Enola’s relationship with Lord Tewkesbury has grown into a full romance.

Throughout the investigation, Tewkesbury helps Enola by protecting Sarah Chapman and using his political influence to support her case. After the mystery is solved, the two share a dance, confess their feelings for one another, and leave together, marking a new chapter in their relationship.

Don’t forget about Dr. Watson

The film’s mid-credits scene introduces another familiar character from the Sherlock Holmes universe.

When Sherlock returns to Baker Street expecting to see Enola, he instead meets Dr. John Watson, who arrives after being sent there by Enola to become Sherlock’s new roommate and companion.

What to expect from Enola Holmes 3

The third film takes Enola to the island nation of Malta, where personal and professional dreams collide in what Netflix describes as her most tangled and treacherous case yet. As Enola prepares to marry Lord Tewkesbury, she receives the shocking news that Sherlock has been kidnapped. She immediately begins searching for her brother while also grappling with her complicated feelings about marriage.

Enola Holmes 3 is directed by Philip Barantini, with Jack Thorne returning to write the screenplay after penning the first two films. Like its predecessors, the movie is based on The Enola Holmes Mysteries by Nancy Springer.
