Everything We Know About ‘Practical Magic 2’

In an age of superheroes, space operas, and reboots, it is about time for cinema’s most powerful women to enchant the big screen once more with feeling in Practical Magic 2.

After twenty-five years, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman resurrect the Owens sisters in a ritual welcoming a new generation into their coven. According to Producer Denise Di Novi, Practical Magic 2 will adapt Alice Hoffman’s novel The Book of Magic.

Practical Magic’s History

The first Practical Magic film was conjured in theaters on October 16, 1998. It was a concoction of romance, mysticism, and sisterhood, based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman that introduced Sally and Gillian Owens, the latest witches in their family at the time.

Despite mixed reception and an underwhelming box-office performance of $68 million worldwide, Practical Magic has since gained a cult fanbase as powerful as the Owens Witches themselves. As the movie gained immortality through streaming, VOD, and clips on YouTube and TikTok, the fanbase grew bigger and louder by the nostalgic wave that permeates the film industry.

Practical Magic 2’s Production Details

Supernaturally, it was only a matter of time before the powers that be (Warner Bros.) greenlit a sequel. The studio delighted devoted followers with news confirming the development of Practical Magic 2 in June 2024. Pre-production began in May 2025, followed by filming from July to September in Hertfordshire, England.

Practical Magic 2’s Plot Details

Based on The Book of Magic, the sequel follows Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) as they face a bloodline hex with their kin.

Warner Bros’ logline states: “Practical Magic 2 returns to a world steeped in moonlit mischief and powerful ancestral magic, as the Owens sisters must confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all in a must-see cinematic event of fun, magic and mayhem.”

At the center of the family curse is Kylie Owens(Joey King), all grown up. As she prepares for an eternity with her soulmate, she is struck by tragedy. Things take a turn for the worse when she goes down a dark path after discovering her powers. Sally, Gillian, and their aunts, Frances and Bridget, must band together to save their family and Kylie’s soul before all is lost.

What is the Owens Curse?

Owens women are cursed with loneliness, essentially. Men in love with them succumb to untimely deaths. Because of this curse, Sally and Gillian’s father died when they were young. Overcome by grief, their mother took her own life shortly after. The sisters have been in the care of their aunts ever since. As we see in Practical Magic 2’s trailer, the love of Kylie’s life will meet tragedy next.

The Faces of Practical Magic 2

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are not Hollywood’s only veterans reentering the world of Practical Magic. They are joined by Oscar Winner Dianne Wiest and Oscar Nominee Stockard Channing, reprising their roles as the Owens aunts and maternal figures since Sally and Gillian’s parents died.

Apart from Joey King as the young adult Kylie Owens, newcomers include Maisie Williams as Antonia Owens, Lee Pace as warlock Ian Wright, along with Xolo Madriueña as Kylie’s doomed lover, and Solly McLeod.

The Director Behind Practical Magic 2

Griffin Dunne, the director of the original cult classic, did not step back into the director’s chair. Multiple award-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier took his place. She is the first female director to collectively win the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the European Film Awards, and the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Bier knows Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman well, having collaborated with both of them before. She directed Bullock’s Birdbox thriller on Netflix, and recently she directed Kidman’s The Perfect Couple series, based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel, also for Netflix. Her other works include Showtime’s The First Lady, The Night Manager on Prime Video, In A Better World, and Things We Lost In The Fire.

Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett make up her writing team. The former of which co-wrote the first film with Robin Swicord and Adam Brooks.
