The highly anticipated Season 2 of One Piece is around the corner, and this time, we’re venturing into the Grand Line, where we’ll discover new islands, face new enemies and come across new devil fruits.
Before we dive “Into the Grand Line”, let’s look back at East Blue and see where it all began for the Straw Hat Pirates. Here’s everything you need to remember from One Piece Season 1 before Season 2 releases.
What is the One Piece?
The One Piece is a legendary treasure that Gold Roger (Michael Dorman) discovered, and before he was executed, he set everyone on a task to go look for this treasure, which started the Great Pirate Era. Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) is one of many pirates who have decided to take to the seas and search for this hidden treasure, which will grant its finder the title of King of the Pirates.
Who Are the Straw Hat Pirates?
The Straw Hat pirates are a pirate crew that Monkey D. Luffy has brought together to help him assist on his goal of finding the One Piece and becoming King of the Pirates. His crew consists of Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero) and Sanji (Taz Skylar), and their next goal is to venture into the Grand Line on their ship, the Going Merry.
Monkey D. Luffy is the enigmatic captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, which is named after his iconic straw hat he kept from Shanks. Luffy has his eye on becoming the King of the Pirates and is on the search for the legendary treasure, the One Piece. He also ate the Gum Gum Devil Fruit, which has made his body rubber.
Zoro is the deadly pirate hunter turned pirate who proves to be a loyal ally. His aim is to become the world’s greatest swordsman, and although his sense of direction is bad, he plans to defeat the best of the best to earn that title.
Nami is the Straw Hat’s navigator, and with her village finally safe, she’s able to tackle her dream and draw a map of the world (while stealing a thing or two and going shopping, of course).
Usopp is an ace marksman who one day wants to become the greatest warrior of the sea. His childlike wonder brings him great stories of adventures he’s never been on, and he can tend to be a bit of a coward, but his loyalty to the people surrounding him and his good heart make up for more than that.
Sani is the Straw Hat’s personal chef (which is perfect for Luffy). He’s passionate, flirty and has a fiery personality. His goal is to find the All Blue, the only place where it’s said you can find all the fish from all four seas — East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, and South Blue.
Where Have the Straw Hats Travelled So Far?
The first season of One Piece covered the entirety of the East Blue saga aside from the Loguetown arc, which has found itself as the introduction to Season 2.
Gold Roger’s execution set the course for the Great Pirate Era, with pirates taking to the sea to search for his legendary hidden treasure, the One Piece. 22 years later, Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who has accidentally eaten the Gum Gum Fruit, which granted him elasticity powers, has ventured out to find the infamous hidden treasure.
Along his journey, he saves a boy called Koby from Captain Alvida, defeating her in the process. Together, Luffy and Koby sail to a Marine base in Shells Town to find a map of the Grand Line, the route that will supposedly lead Luffy to the One Piece. At Sails Town, Luffy frees the Pirate Hunter Zoro from Marine Captain Morgan while also getting help from Nami to steal the map from Morgan’s safe. Luffy and Zoro defeat Morgan, and the trio all escape, while Koby remains to be enlisted by the Marines and live out his dream.
The trio reach Orange Town, which is held captive by the pirate captain, Buggy the Clown, who has ties to Luffy’s childhood idol, Shanks, from whom he received his iconic Straw Hat. Buggy manages to capture the three, and despite his powers from the Chop Chop Fruit, which allows him to split himself apart, he fails to defeat the three.
They begin to make their way to Syrup Village, now dubbed the Straw Hat Pirates, in hopes of finding a ship they can use to sail into the Grand Line. While Luffy wants the ship with a sheep figurehead, Usopp informs him the ship is not for sale. Luffy and Usopp begin to bond over Luffy knowing his father, Yasopp, who was a part of Shank’s pirate crew. Usopp’s best friend Kaya is under threat when her butler is revealed to be Kuro, the presumed dead captain of the Black Cat Pirates. The Marines arrive and capture Luffy, but Zoro frees him, and together they defeat Kuro and his subordinates. Usopp joins the Straw Hat Pirates and, as a reward from Kaya, receives the ship which they officially call the Going Merry.
While being attacked by Marines and Monkey D. Garp, who’s revealed to be Luffy’s grandfather, they eventually escape and find themselves at Baratie, a floating restaurant. Garp hires Dracule Mihawk, the world’s greatest swordsman and also one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, pirates whom the World Government have found easier to use as allies than enemies, to bring Luffy in alive. At Baratie, Luffy befriends the sous chef, Sanji; meanwhile, Zoro duels Mihawk but loses the fight and two swords in the process, causing him to promise Luffy that he’ll never lose again. They’re all interrupted as the Fishman Captain Arlong arrives for the Grand Line map, and it’s soon revealed that Nami is one of his crewmates. Luffy gets defeated by Arlong as he’s thrown into the sea (because Devil Fruit users can’t swim), but Sanji saves him. Zoro becomes Luffy’s first mate, Sanji joins the crew, and together they set off to rescue Nami with the help of Buggy’s severed head.
Buggy leads the Straw Hats to Conomi Island, where Nami’s hometown, Coco Village, is being held captive by Arlong. It’s here where they meet Nojiko, Nami’s older adoptive sister, and learn that Arlong killed their adoptive mother and that Nami has been working for Arlong since her death to help buy back the freedom of Coco Village. Arlong tricks her, stealing all the money and bribing Marine Captain Nezumi to hide his crimes. This causes Nami to go into a breakdown, begging Luffy for help. Luffy and his crew attack Arlong Park, with Buggy regaining his body and escaping in all the madness. Luffy ultimately defeats Arlong, destroying the tower in the process and freeing Coco Village. The Straw Hats escape the Marines once again despite Garp defeating Luffy in a fight. Luffy receives his first bounty of 30,000,000 Berries.
With everything behind them, they now set sail for the Grand Line.
Season 2 of One Piece premieres March 10 on Netflix.
