
Nexus Point News learned that Hailey Gates is in talks to join Takashi Miike’s untitled Kyoto film alongside Charli XCX and Milly Alcock.
The project is based off of an original idea by Miike and Charlie, with the screenplay being penned by Ross Evans and Yumiko Aoyagi. Charli and Miike will produce with Miike’s longtime producing partner Misako Saka. Good World Productions, Yumiko Aoyagi Productions, and OLM are also producing. Starring alongside Charli XCX and Alcock are Norman Reedus, Kiko Mizuhara, and Show Kasamatsu. Nexus Point has reached out for comment.
The film follows three best friends who take a girls trip to Kyoto, who awaken a tortured spirit (Mizuhara) leading to one of them being possessed by her. Charli XCX and Alcock portray two of the friends, with Hailey Gates potentially rounding out the trio.
Hailey Gates is a journalist, filmmaker, actress and model best known for hosting Viceland’s States of Undress. As an actress she’s best known for her roles in Uncut Gems, Challengers, Twin Peaks: The Return, and Marty Supreme. Gates recently collaborated with Charli in Aidan Zamiri’s The Moment. Gates made her feature film debut as a filmmaker with Atropia which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize. The film starred Alia Shawkat, Callum Turner, Jane Levy, and Chloe Sevigny. Gates is repped by WME.
Miike’s work spans different mediums and genres and has directed over one hundred projects. He’s best known for his work in the horror space with films like Audition, Ichi the Killer, and Visitor Q. Charlie XCX is a three-time Grammy award winning artist. Earlier this year she starred in and produced The Moment which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival as well as I Want Your Sex and The Gallerist which also opened at Sundance last month. As an actress she also appeared in Erupcja, 100 Nights of Hero, and Overcompensating.
Miike and Charli XCX’s untitled Kyoto film begins production next month in Japan.
