And so, the dragons dance once more. Since the conclusion of House of the Dragon's second season in August, fans have been eagerly awaiting news on when filming for the highly anticipated third season would begin. At last, we have an answer, or at least in part. Showrunner Ryan Condal has shed some light on what’s next for the epic HBO series as we prepare to leave 2024 behind and enter the new year.
While speaking with co-host David Mandel on their podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, Condal was asked about the start date for filming season three. While he confirmed a date has been set, he chose not to reveal it to avoid sparking the frenzy that such news would surely ignite among the show’s passionate fan base. However, Condal did confirm that filming will begin in the first quarter of 2025, likely between January and March. This aligns with earlier hints from cast members like Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II Targaryen), who suggested a March start, and Graham McTavish, who is rumoured to return as Ser Harrold Westerling, alluding to the same timeframe.
When asked if he’d be taking a break for the holidays, Condal confirmed he would, for two reasons. First, production takes a mandatory pause, and second, he intends to step away from his writing desk to recharge before diving back into the world of Ice and Fire. Pre-production is reportedly already underway, though it hasn’t been officially announced. Production is reportedly set to pick up again on January 3, continuing well into the fall.
Looking ahead to the new season, Condal offered fans some reassuring words.
This is the most calm, orderly, and as ready as we’ve been in three seasons of making it,
he said.
Part of that is the third season, part of that is the fact that everybody I interact with creatively on a day-to-day basis is back from a previous season.
Condal also teased that the third season is shaping up to be the most “outlandish” production yet.
With the pieces falling into place and the dragons preparing to soar once again, it’s clear that season three is set to raise the stakes even higher. So, mark your calendars and sharpen your swords, because the Dance of Dragons is far from over, and it’s about to get even wilder.
