  • Zack Snyder Presents 'Twilight of the Gods' at Annecy Festival

Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Jay Oliva presented their upcoming animated series Twilight of the Gods at the Annecy Animation Festival during the What's On Netflix panel. The creators showcased two clips, several drawings, and a special teaser trailer edited by Zack Snyder himself. During the presentation, the hybrid animation style was also highlighted by the creators. While most of the series is 2D hand-drawn animation, 3D animation was used in some instances such as the animation for the main characters. Zack Snyder praised animation and has said fantasy illustration has always been his favorite. He described it as "incredibly satisfying storytelling in its higher form" and as a "beautiful, complete art form." Snyder then joked about animation being easier in terms of storytelling because it is devoid of actors' interpretation: You draw something cool, then the actors will come and f**k it up. According to the guidebook given for the presentation; Episodes 1 and 8 are directed by Zack Snyder Episodes 2 and 7 are directed by Jay Oliva Episodes 3 and 5 are directed by Tim Divar/Andrew Tamadl Episodes 4 and 6 are directed by Dave Hartman/Andrew Tamadl This information is relevant because, during the presentation, it was mentioned that Zack Snyder's episodes would be longer. It means we can expect a longer pilot and finale. In the same guidebook, Zack Snyder talks more about the series: Twilight of the Gods is a heroic story packed with epic themes of loss and revenge. All of the characters are searching for some sort of catharsis along the way. They've all lost something and they're looking to find some kind of retribution while hopefully coming out the other side having made peace with the demons that sent them on this quest to begin with. In one of the clips that were shown, Sigrid and Leif seek help from the god Tiwaz, who's rotting away because he doesn't have many people worshipping him. In this world, not having worshippers means rotting for gods. They get rejected as they are "asking too much". Sigrid then offers him immortality and says she will bring the golden apple from Fafnir the dragon. Tiwaz believes they are going to fail, but still accepts the offer. In another clip, we've been shown the epic dragon fight scene. There is not much to say about this scene except that the action was beautifully animated and the music was an integral part of this epic scene. This presentation certainly put Twilight of the Gods on my must-watch list. Twilight of The Gods is coming to Netflix on September 19.

  • Warner Bros. Unveils 'Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim' Special First Look at Annecy Festival

This year's Annecy Animation Festival is more special than ever from premieres to special first looks at upcoming animated projects. One of the projects we have seen was The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim . Andy Serkis, who was a special guest at the event, held a panel with The War of the Rohirrim director Kenji Kamiyama, Warner Bros. Senior Vice President Jason DeMarco, and producers Philippa Boyens and Joseph Chou. The panel started with a special message by Peter Jackson, who was revealed to be an executive producer of the film at the event, thanking the Annecy attendees and saying Annecy was the first audience. However, the message was interrupted by Gollum attacking Jackson and dropping several f-bombs. The video ended with Gollum saying “Animate this motherf****r.” The panel then continued with Andy Serkis presenting the first 20 minutes of The War of the Rohirrim , which ended with a short teaser for the film. The official synopsis for the film reads as: Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg - a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm's Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Hera, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction. The preview we have seen introduced the characters and showed us how Wulf came to seek vengeance. The creators mentioned how they had very little material to work on and how they had to give all the characters meaningful backgrounds. Philippa Boyens described the movie as "epic and intimate character work." The film being the first female-led Lord of the Rings feature was one of the central talking points. Boyens and Kamiyama also mentioned how the character Héra "sort of emerged" naturally when they started to craft the story and they believed it should be her story first and foremost. Boyens also added Héra is "not the typical superhero heroine type," and how she is a "more real character with flaws and courage." It was also mentioned that current version of the movie is 2 hours 30 minutes, however, they noted that they were still editing and it was not the final runtime. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will release in theaters on December 13.

  • EXCLUSIVE: DC Studios Keeps It Righteous Adding The Writing Team for ‘BOOSTER GOLD’

Touted as a superhero story of imposter syndrome by James Gunn, the secret Max series is taking shape behind the scenes. It’s been previously reported that an actor is already cast to play Booster Gold (first reported by r/DCULEAKS) and that they’re close to getting a showrunner (reported by DanielRPK). In addition, there was a listing on Production List stating the series will begin filming on July 8, 2024, which was quickly debunked by James Gunn commenting on a fan’s question about the rumor. We’ve now heard from our source the following names are attached to write the Booster Gold series. DC Studios is tapping into Danny McBride, John Carcieri and Jeff Fradley the creative team behind the HBO Max Original series The Righteous Gemstones. Danny McBride This will be McBride’s fourth TV series – Eastbound and Down (2009-2013), Vice Principals (2016- 2017) and The Righteous Gemstones (2018 – 2024) and his first foray into superheroes. McBride is no stranger in venturing outside his comedy roots when he revived the much celebrated Halloween (2018) reboot. Jeff Fradley & John Carcieri Fradley, a longtime collaborator of McBride and Carcieri, has worked with them previously on The Righteous Gemstones and Vice Principals. Fradley was also a writer for the 2018 “Halloween” reboot along with McBride. Carcieri is best known as the co-creator of The Last O.G (2018-2021) with Jordan Peele. He has also previously collaborated with McBride on Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones. Much is still under wraps for this DC Studios Max series. The only description we have about Booster Gold is by James Gunn when he announced DC Studios’ Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate: “Next up is a TV series called Booster Gold. Booster Gold is one of comic’s really popular cult heroes. He is a fascinating guy. He’s a loser from the future who uses future technology to come back to present day and become a superhero so that people will love him. It is basically the superhero story of imposter syndrome on an HBO Max series.” This story is still developing…

  • 'The Office' Spin-off Gets A Title And Adds Some Familiar Names To The Writers' Room

It wasn't long ago that the exciting news broke about a new spin-off of The Office, created by Greg Daniels (The Office) and Michael Koman (Nathan For You). This anticipated series will be set in the same universe as the original The Office. While it's still unknown whether some faces from the original series will make an appearance, the spin-off has already added some new names. It was recently reported that Domhnall Gleeson (About Time, Ex Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (White Lotus) would star in the series. Additionally, we've got a basic premise for the spin-off: The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters. In addition to this information, we are excited to share that we have discovered the name of the series and the writers' room lineup. The new The Office spin-off is called The Paper, according to listings on the Writers Guild of America website. The title is simple and to the point, much like The Office, and it serves as a common denominator for both series; from paper company to newspaper and publishing... The writers' room of the series includes the following names, apart from the creators and co-showrunners Daniels and Koman: Paul B. Lieberstein (The Office, The Newsroom), you might recognize the name since Lieberstein portrayed the much-hated HR head Toby in The Office. Jessi R. Klein (Dead to Me, Big Mouth, Mrs. Fletcher) Amanda Rosenberg (Big Door Prize, Fate: Winx Saga) Ben Philippe (Only Murders in the Building, Interview With the Vampire) Patrick Kang (Trial & Error, Young Rock) Michael Levin (Trial & Error, Young Rock) While the WGA listings confirm the involvement of these individuals in The Paper, their specific roles within the series remain undisclosed. The series is also listed for 2024-2025 TV Season. Considering we have got a few announcements recently, I believe it won't be long until we get some more cast announcements and details. This story is still developing...

  • REVIEW: D.W. Waterson Sticks the Landing with Sapphic Sport Film 'BACKSPOT'

DISCLAIMER: This article contains minor spoilers for Backspot. If you have looking for a new sapphic coming-of-age story, you're in luck! Backspot is exactly what you're looking for. Backspot follows Riley (Devery Jacobs), a formidable backspot on a mid-level cheerleading squad. This all changes when Eileen McNamara (Evan Rachel Wood) scouts said squad for new recruits to join the Thunderhawks, an All Star team banking on high performance from all of its members. Fueled by ambitiousness and love for her girlfriend Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), Riley would excel only if she could get her anxiety under control. Riley will do anything to impress her new coach, stemming from her lack of being heard and appreciated in her home life. Riddled with anxieties and competition looming, this young, queer athlete seeks to decipher her own voice from her teammates while forming a healthier relationship to cheerleading. One mesmerizing part of this film includes D.W. Waterson's use of foreshadowing to make the audience feel more connected to every character involved. While there are many individual character arcs within Backspot , Waterson ties them together with a bow made out of subtleties the audience can't help but notice: every detail pieces into something without leaving any information behind. Despite this being Waterson's directorial debut, they accomplish this with such expertise that you'd think they've directed dozens of motion pictures before Backspot . I felt compelled by this storyline expertly taking its viewer and placing them directly into the lives of these characters without missing a beat. Waterson can't help but make you like these individuals and understand all of their struggles, even when they aren't explicitly stated. This can directly be seen not only in Riley's story, but Amanda's as well (more on that later). The use of clichés from numerous forms of cheer-centered media acts as a helping hand to the audience with understanding the character work of Backspot first and foremost. After sitting with these characters for a little over an hour and a half, I found myself finishing this film with a deep understanding and respect for Waterson's ability to throw me into this world of the Thunderhawks and feel fully immersed by it. All of this was accomplished with excellent character work being supported by the unique flare of camera work and editing seen throughout this picture. If Waterson can do this with their directorial debut, they will be an unstoppable force in the future. Backspot should rightfully earn D.W. Waterson a spot on your Directors to Watch list. Backspot' s electric directorial and technical work could not be effective without the brilliant performances of its cast. The ensemble lifts Waterson's intended narrative by inviting audiences to this world from the very start of this film. After watching, the two performances that stood out the most to me were from Devery Jacobs and Kudakwashe Rutendo. Devery Jacobs (Riley) is the definitive stand out of this film with an incredibly dynamic performance sprinkled with the nuances and personality of a real figure. Backspot relies on Riley's day-to-day transformation from a mid-level cheerleader to Thunderhawk in order for its narrative to be effective, requiring its lead to show a multitude of emotions ranging from lovesick to anxiety - Jacobs excels in all. As I've mentioned before, this picture places you directly in the lives of these characters from the start. Without missing a beat, Jacobs is able to transport the viewer into Riley's existence while realistically exploring all of the emotions one would feel while going through a major, life-changing event. Part of this includes viewers getting to see the physical and mental toll that anxiety takes on an individual in the duration of this film. Having an actress who is able to realistically pull of all this off can make or break a film: Jacobs' magnificent performance makes Backspot soar. Kudakwashe Rutendo is the undeniable breakout star from Backspot - she certainly is mine. Similar to Jacobs, Rutendo gives a nuanced and realistic portrayal of Amanda: Riley's girlfriend on the same cheer team going through different experiences than her partner's while advancing to the Thunderhawks. The contrast with Rutendo's performance is that it includes simplicities that viewers have to use to get a full understanding of the woman she's portraying. Even with Backspot focusing on Riley as its lead character, Amanda feels just as fleshed out in her own right. The downside of this feeling left me with wanting to see more of Amanda's life nearing the end of this film. Regardless, I'm excited to see what Kudakwashe Rutendo does next with her film career. Backspot's undeniable beating heart is the relationship between Riley and Amanda. From start to finish, viewers are able to see the highs and lows between this pair. The striking chemistry between Jacobs and Rutendo allows for viewers to experience these moments with them. The personal moments between Riley and Amanda were not only some of my favorite moments of the film, but they allowed for Waterson's world to feel more realistic. The choice of focusing this movie on two young, queer women of color brings a unique narrative into the picture that hasn't been explored with typical cliché cheer stories. The connection between Riley and Amanda not only makes the hardships of becoming an All Star more painful to the viewer, but it brings a refreshing light to how a connection between teammates can be more than just friendship. Centering a cheer story on queer women in what's known to be a predominately straight sport is nice to see from a lesbian perspective, especially when the leads have the chemistry to make their connection believable. Waterson highlights other gay characters in their ensemble, including Evan Rachel Woods' Eileen and Thomas Antony Olajide's Devon. The simple implementation of queer role models provides another narrative young LGBTQ+ people can relate to: wanting to impress your queer elders. Viewers can see this theme in this film through Riley's interpretation of Eileen. While some (straight) audience members will certainly view this message as a form of athletes wanting to show off for their coach, others will be able to respect that this story revolves around a young, queer woman wanting to impress a lesbian in authority. Backspot's casual placement of LGBTQ+ characters throughout isn't something unheard of within cinema, but it is something to respect within the overall message of this film. As a lesbian, I can only hope other filmmakers take one out of Waterson's journal when it comes to creating queer characters with understanding the intersectionality of queerness between communities within everyday, slice-of-life and coming of age movies while casually pursuing storytelling with the same care as straight characters and their relationships. Rating : 4.5/5 D.W. Waterson's directorial debut Backspot, starring Devery Jacobs and Evan Rachel Wood, releases on May 31 in select theaters across the U.S. and on demand .

  • REVIEW: 'My Adventures With Superman' Season 2

During the first season of My Adventures With Superman , Clark (Jack Quaid) had to figure out how to balance his personal life and being the Man of Steel. Picking up shortly after the explosive events of Season 1, we’re beginning to see Clark struggling with that balance and feeling more alienated than ever. However, there is a glimpse of hope that he may not be the only Kryptonian. Much like the Season 1, Season 2 adds new twists to the classic Superman mythos introducing a new backstory to the destruction of Krypton and the Fortress of Solitude. In addition, Season 2 shakes up the status quo of our favorite trio for better or for worse. Lois Lane (Alice Lee) is still a headstrong reporter willing to jump into any dangers however after the revelations of Season 1 regarding the invading Kryptonians and the fact Superman could eventually become evil, Lois may not have Clark’s best interest in mind and may side with her father. Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid) on the other hand has allowed his recent success and millionaire status affect his judgement in humorous ways and may have inadvertently gave Lex Luthor the inspiration he needed to become Superman’s greatest foe. The first episode of this season “More Things in Heaven and Earth” jumps headfirst into the burgeoning romance between Clark and Lois. Love is in the air in Metropolis and Clark struggles to plan the perfect Valentines for Lois. As for Jimmy, he’s now the head of Flamebird Video Division of the Daily Planet and is willing to spend top dollar to fund the trio’s antics. There’s an ongoing visual gag seeing Jimmy’s finances dwindle. This episode was a bit unbalanced. Instead of focusing on the Valentine’s Day shenanigans, we’re thrust to the attic for a major plot revelation setting the stage for the remainder of the season. It’s here where Clark learns more of his Kryptonian heritage by Jor-El (Jason Marnicha)  and the revelation that his cousin, Kara Zor-El is alive. Luckily episode 2 “Adventures with my Girlfriend” maintained its focus and sets up the larger narrative of this season. Though Amanda Waller (Debra Wilson) and Slade (Chris Parnell) made a brief appearance in the first episode, Waller and Task Force X are front and center here. Superman and Lois must perform a half hazard prison break to retrieve General Lane while Jimmy is sidelined to manage his newly minted Flamebird team consisting of interns and a Steve Lombard. Waller shined in this episode showcasing her true nature. She’s ruthless and will subjugate innocent civilians to experimentations to serve their country. In addition, the episode showcases the beginnings of a fissure between Clark and Lois due to General Lane’s disdain for Superman. Clark wants to find his cousin and Lois is hesitant on the idea for more kryptonians. Though Jimmy is sidelined in this episode, we’re introduced to a particularly interesting dynamic between him and Lex Luthor giving Jimmy more to do in the overall story of this season. This season starts off little over the place, but luckily finds its footing. It’s going to be interesting to see how the ramifications of the main trio’s choices will have on their relationships. Season 2 shares the same humor and charm that surprised us in Season 1. The show is not afraid to mix things up on the Superman formula giving us a fresh take on the character. I can’t wait to see how this season shapes up, especially seeing the growing tension between Clark and Lois and the introduction of Supergirl.   Less than a year after season 1, the first 2 episodes of My Adventures with Superman Season 2 will premiere on Adult Swim on May 25th and stream on Max the following day (followed by a weekly release).   Official Synopsis for Season 2: In the latest season, the three best friends face a host of new threats. Powerful foes will emerge from Clark’s alien past, Amanda Waller will take aim at Superman, Lois will grapple with the future, and Jimmy Olsen will spend an unbelievable amount of money. Krypton is coming for our young heroes, and its arrival will test their strength, loyalty, and love like never before.

  • DC Studios' 'LANTERNS' Adds Writing and Producing Team

Though the only official responses we’ve received regarding the Lanterns series have been emojis from DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn, the show is rapidly taking shape behind the scenes. It has been previously reported that Chris Mundy was writing the series and serving as the showrunner (first reported by r/DCULeaks), and Damon Lindelof was in talks to produce (reported by Daniel RPK). We’ve now uncovered that the following names are officially attached to the Lanterns series thanks to their WGA profiles, and while the specific roles of these names are not yet confirmed, we can make some educated guesses: Update on 25.05.2024 : James Gunn has confirmed some of the names we've listed alongside Tom King. Chris Mundy Since it is officially confirmed that Chris Mundy is attached to Lanterns , this supports earlier reports about Mundy being the showrunner and a writer for the series. Mundy has previously served as a showrunner on the crime drama Ozark , and as an executive producer on crime series Criminal Minds . Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson Damon Lindelof, known for his work on The Leftovers and Lost , is another significant addition to Lanterns . This isn't Lindelof’s first venture with DC and Warner Bros. Television; he previously served as the showrunner for the critically acclaimed series Watchmen . Since the previous reports line up with his addition to this series, it is likely that Lindelof will be a producer on the series. Whether he will also write for Lanterns remains unclear, as his specific roles haven't been listed. Justin Britt-Gibson, known for writing Counterpart and Into The Badlands , is likely to be a writer for Lanterns as well. It’s notable that Lindelof and Britt-Gibson were initially brought in as screenwriters for a Star Wars project, but departed in March 2023, according to Deadline . This departure seemingly paved the way for their involvement in Lanterns . Breannah Gibson and Vanessa Baden Kelly Breannah Gibson, one of the story writers on DC's The Penguin , is likely to take on a similar role in Lanterns . Vanessa Baden Kelly, executive story editor of Max's The Sex Lives Of The College Girls , is another addition to the Lanterns series. Kelly is likely another writer/story editor for the series given her past credentials. Even though much remains under wraps, James Gunn has said Lanterns is part of DC Studios' Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate: We call it Lanterns and it is starring two of our favorite Green Lanterns — Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It’s going to be with HBO Max, as all of our series are that we’re going to talk about today. It is more of a True Detective –type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery. This description aligns with Gunn's vision for the series, considering the writers and producers we've listed have extensive experience in crime dramas, sci-fi, and mystery genres. Now that the writing and producing team is officially attached to Lanterns , we can anticipate more announcements and updates in the near future. This story is still developing.

Taylor is distinguished by his ability to portray passion through the screen as well as by being "virulently allergic to gratuitous directorial flourishes," he says of himself. Now, Alan has once again returned to the World of Ice and Fire in House of the Dragon Season Two, where he will direct episodes one and four of the fiery series. In the upcoming new season of House of the Dragon , Kilner returns to the royal fold as she takes on directorial duties for episodes two and five. As it stands we currently have no information on what conflict episodes two and four may depict, or which characters will feature. However, Kilner has in the past served as a director who helms episodes that enhance the narrative and develop its characters for the larger story. Therefore we can hope to be reassured that her time with the new season will be just as transformative for both the show and the audience as it has been in the past. As no stranger to the World of Ice and Fire , Patel's directional talents shined through in House of the Dragon's (Season One) highest-rated episode, 'The Lord of the Tides.' Patel was praised for showcasing the power of the cast through heavy and emotional moments and passionately delivered scenes. Now, Patel has returned for House of the Dragon Season Two to tackle episodes three and eight, and since this season is shortened from ten episodes to eight, this means she will helm what is sure to be an explosive season finale. View Andrij Parekh's full filmography here on IMDb. Loni Peristere EPISODE 207 Loni Peristere is an award-winning television producer-director and former visual effects supervisor who co-founded his own visual effects studio Zoic Studios. Peristere is noted for his visual effects shot design for the beloved television series Firefly and Battlestar Galactica , which creatively inspired the look of modern visual effects cinematography. The producer-director has a long list of projects that have his artistry as a creator attached to them, most notably Banshee , American Horror Story , Warrior , and The Witcher . His multi-talented versatile approach to storytelling makes Peristere capable of working across different genres and formats. Now the time has come for Peristere to lend his talents to the World of Ice and Fire . Peristere will helm episode seven of House of the Dragon Season Two, and with the season shortened from ten episodes to eight, episode seven will now serve as the infamous penultimate episode event of the Game of Thrones franchise. For those who are unaware, in Game of Thrones  fashion the penultimate episode has historically featured some of the most shocking or awe-inspiring events of the season. What House of the Dragon Season Two's penultimate episode has in store for us is a mystery, but given that the war for the Iron Throne has officially begun, we can look forward to witnessing something special.
