Following an audacious level of success within the video game industry, Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video has secured the rights to Sony PlayStation’s esteemed mythological story franchise, God of War. They are set to develop the franchise’s first jump into live-action following a two-season order, with the streaming adventure taking place within the Norse Gods era, an adaptation of the video game series’ 2018 revival by Santa Monica Studios. Helmed by Showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), the series features a variety of stars, including Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as lead protagonist and titular God of War, Kratos

In 2022’s video game sequel, God of War: Ragnarök, Hurst voiced the joint-primary antagonist and Mjolnir-wielding God of Thunder, Thor. His performance was received by fans with resounding praise thanks to Hurst’s bellowing, drunken frustrations at Kratos’ (Christopher Judge) violent killings of Thor’s children, Magni and Modi, in the 2018 installment. However, Hurst’s leap into the role of the destructive Spartan for the live action series has been met with unanimous praise amongst fans, who eagerly anticipate the first trailer.

Emmy winning director Frederick E.O Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) will direct the series’ first two episodes.

What Will The Series Be About?

Prime Video’s live-action adaptation is set to closely mimic the narrative of the beloved 2018 video game release. Fans will follow the iconic Spartan warrior, Kratos (Ryan Hurst) embarking on a journey with his son Atreus (Callum Vinson) to spread the ashes of his wife, and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Whilst a clear mission remains at the finish line, the duo’s adventure provides a secondary purpose of self-discovery, combative training and father-son bonding.

However, unexpected rivals and foes spark their expedition with dangerous trials, calamitous threats and deep-rooted trauma, as Norse Gods within the realm, drunk on power, uncover the truth of who Kratos truly is, and the dark secrets he withholds from Atreus. Battles against enemies, the inner-self, and even each other are guaranteed to set the series alight, in hopes of replicating the 2018 game’s award winning streak.

THE CAST

Ryan Hurst is set to play the destructive God of War, Kratos, in the character’s first live-action appearance. Best recognised for his previous performances in FX’s Sons of Anarchy where he played Opie Winston, a character possessing a rich 5 season long story ending in tragedy, now hailed as the series’ most tragic moment. Since 2015 Hurst has featured in the recently cancelled The Abandons on Netflix, and is also set for a small role in Christopher Nolan’s (The Dark Knight) 2026 summer blockbuster The Odyssey.

Callum Vinson scooped up the role of Atreus following the young actor’s previous success as young serial killer Jason Voorhees in Peacock’s soon to be released Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake. Atreus faces godly challenges has he navigates Kratos’ teachings, all whilst unaware of his powerful heritage and the implications this carries throughout their journey. Arguably the hardest role to cast, given the necessity of a strong child actor, Vinson has been met with warm welcomes from fans of the franchise who remain eager for the first reveal of footage from the series.

Mandy Patinkin has secured the role of the Norse All-father and Asgard’s Ruler, Odin. This announcement caused initial confusion amongst fans of the video game franchise, as Odin doesn’t appear until the sequel game. Yet featuring as a cunningly manipulative genius, and ruler of Asgardian gods, his presence demands significant attention and fans appear to be gifted Odin’s screentime earlier than expected. Patinkin is best known for his iconic role as Inigo Montoya in Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride (1987), alongside his stints on Homeland and Criminal Minds. Patinkin has previously won a Tony award for his Broadway performance in Evita.

Ed Skrein of Deadpool and Rebel Moon fame will play villain Baldur, son of Odin. Driven to near madness by his curse of invulnerability and the inability to feel pleasure, his obsession with finding a cure finally pushes him into insanity. In the video game series, Baldur is the main antagonist of 2018’s return title who seeks an unknown Giant that perhaps holds the secret on how to enter Jotunheim. Upon finding Kratos, Baldur wrongly assumes the retired God of War to be said target, and thus a violent rampage and cat-and-mouse chase across the realm begins. Ed Skrein’s Baldur is set to feature as Season 1’s main antagonist.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will take over Ryan Hurst’s role as Thor, the God of Thunder, in Prime Video’s God of War series. Given the character’s behemoth status in Norse mythology, an actor possessing a similar presence was needed to step into the role. However, God of War’s interpretation of the Norse legend is far removed from the Marvelification of the character (as portrayed by Chris Hemsworth). Darri Ólafsson’s take will feature a more beaten-down, drunken twist, one who shamefully drinks himself asleep each night, much to the disappointment of Odin. No longer a righteous warrior, Thor has much to prove in his battles against Kratos. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is best recognised for his role as Mr. Drummond in Severance.

Sonya Walger will play Freya, former Queen of the Valkyries and Norse goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Previously, Freya was married to Odin, a contentious ‘Romeo and Juliet’ styled relationship that saw her banished from her family and ultimately exiled from Vanaheim. Considered a magical witch of the woods, Freya provides guidance to Kratos and Atreus on their mission, playing a pivotal role in their discoveries. Walger found previous fame from her role as Penny Widmore on ABC’s Lost, but more recently featured in For All Mankind as Molly Cobb.

Alastair Duncan is slated to reprise his role as the beloved Mimir from Playstation’s 2018 God of War reboot. A former advisor to Odin, Mimir was banished from Asgard and bound to a tree, until Kratos and Atreus found him. Recognised for sharp humour, an upbeat personality and extensive knowledge of all nine realms, Duncan’s reprising of the role of Mimir was met with unanimous praise amongst fans. Alastair Duncan is best known for his role in the video game series, alongside works in Shadow of Mordor (2014), Shadow of War (2017) and appearances in animated Batman releases as Alfred Pennyworth.

Max Parker is set to play the cocky and arrogant Heimdall, guardian of entrance to Asgard. Granted gifts of foresight and supernatural senses, Heimdall is famously written to sound the Gjallarhorn marking the start of Ragnarök. Again, like Odin, and largely Thor, Heimdall made no appearance in 2018’s God of War, only the sequel, and thus details of his involvement in Prime Video’s first season are largely still under wraps. Parker has previously found success in Netflix’s Boots and Peacock’s The Vampire Academy.

Teresa Palmer will play Sif, Thor’s wife, who battles against her husband’s drunken self-loathing and failures. Sif is often regarded as a highly intelligent woman that navigates the cruelty of Asgardian Gods, leaning towards nurturing her child Thrud, as well as step-children Magni and Modi. Palmer is cited as an exciting Australian actress, having previously featured in Hacksaw Ridge (2016) and delivering an award winning performance in Ride Like A Girl (2019).

Jeff Gulka has been cast in the role of legendary blacksmith Sindri. Atypical, well-meaning and hilariously squeamish, Sindri is considered an expert craftsman responsible for crafting iconic weapons alongside his brother Brok. These include Thor’s Mjolnir, Odin’s spear Gungnir, and the video game’s Leviathan axe wielded by Kratos. Jeff Gulka has previously held roles in The X-Files and Stargate SG-1.

Danny Woodburn will portray Sindri’s bad-mouthed, aggressive and argumentative brother, Brok. Considered the less reasonable of the pair, Brok is equally talented, a fact Sindri is thankful for given his brother’s brazen personality. Woodburn recently shared the screen with Liam Hemsworth in Netflix’s The Witcher.

Ben Chapple is featured in the series as Magni, son of Thor. Described as a natural ladies’ man, his immortal existence has become stale, hollow of greater purpose and a desire to create his own legacy. Ben Chapple has previously been seen on screens through CW’s Good Cop Bad Cop and Paramount’s Playing For Keeps.

Louis Cunningham of Marie Antoinette success will play Modi, Magni’s brother. Obsessed with puzzles and possessing an innately curious mind, Modi finds great joy in solving problems, immersing himself within them. Whilst significantly different to Magni at first glance, both brothers find pleasure in triumphant victory and relish their presence in Asgard.

Island Austin will play Thor and Sif’s youngest child, Thrud. Whilst still a young actress, Austin has featured in major releases such as Insidious 6 (2026). Odin sees greatness and innocence in Thrud, and the pair share a special bond, largely as Odin recognises much of himself in her. Whilst her family is full of loud personalities, Thrud is the peacemaker of the group, despite her young age.

Evelyn Miller is the final of the major cast announcements, so far. Miller will play the recurring role of Gna, Odin’s Valkyrie commander. Valkyries are depicted as fierce warriors devoted to their duty, following Odin’s orders to perfection. In the God of War games, Valkyries dance between friend and foe, varying upon the individual, and thus Gna’s inclusion has sparked great intrigue. Miller has previously appeared in Gangs of London as Naomi Keegan, and had a small role in Prime Video’s Steal that released earlier this year.
