Chris Hemsworth was previously attached to star in Paramount’s upcoming G.I. Joe film, but sources now tell Nexus Point News that the actor has exited the project for undisclosed reasons. Bradley Cooper is now being eyed to take over the lead role in Danny McBride’s new adaptation of G.I. Joe.
Speaking on Happy Sad Confused, McBride revealed that his take on G.I. Joe will center on Duke and take a more grounded approach than audiences might expect.
“Weirdly, it grounds G.I. Joe; it’s not a comedy. It’s kind of suspense and action, and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” McBride said. “You’re following Duke and a group of other Joes… There’s that town in the comic, Springfield, which is a town that’s secretly all Cobra, and so that is where our film takes place.”
Back in February, it was reported that Paramount was developing two competing G.I. Joe scripts—one from Danny McBride and another from disgraced screenwriter Max Landis. McBride’s pitch ultimately won over the studio and is moving forward.
Cooper and McBride have collaborated before. Cooper made a surprise appearance as Elijah Gemstone in an episode of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones.
McBride is best known as the creator and star of Vice Principals and The Righteous Gemstones. He will next voice Bomb in The Angry Birds Movie 3. He is represented by Range Media Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman.
Cooper is known for acclaimed performances in A Star Is Born, American Sniper, and as the voice of Rocket in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Most recently, he appeared in Is This Thing On? and Superman. He is next set to star in Bong Joon Ho’s Ally and the untitled Ocean’s 13 prequel alongside Margot Robbie. Cooper is represented by Range Media Partners.
