Tracker is back on CBS, and Season 4 is already bringing viewers into another chapter of Colter Shaw’s dangerous investigations. While the series continues to deliver missing-person cases and high-stakes searches, some of its most important storylines extend far beyond the people Colter is hired to find. The events of Season 3, in particular, left behind revelations that could have lasting consequences for the reward seeker and those closest to him.
Played by Justin Hartley, Colter finally uncovered the truth behind his father’s death, a mystery that had shaped his relationship with his family for years. But the answers came with a disturbing discovery about a secret government program and a revelation that his older brother, Russell Shaw (Jensen Ackles), has chosen to keep from him. Elsewhere, Reenie Greene (Fiona Rene) struggled with the emotional aftermath of a frightening experience, while new characters introduced in the previous season opened the door to fresh storylines.
With Season 4 continuing to unfold, revisiting these developments can help put the latest episodes into perspective. Here are the essential details to remember before catching up on Tracker.
The Shaw Family’s Secrets Remain
For much of the series, Colter’s search for the truth about his father, Ashton Shaw (Lee Tergesen), has been one of the show’s central storylines. What initially appeared to be a family tragedy gradually developed into a much larger conspiracy, connecting Ashton’s past to a covert government operation.
Season 3 finally revealed the nature of that operation, known as Chrono Statis. Ashton had worked with the program, which conducted cognitive experiments on children with the intention of developing abilities that could be exploited for government purposes. However, he eventually became concerned about the direction of the project and opposed the increasingly disturbing treatment of its young subjects.
His resistance came at a cost. His reputation was damaged, and he moved his family away from their previous life as his fears about the people behind the program intensified. Those fears ultimately proved justified, as Colter’s investigation uncovered the truth about his father’s death. For Colter, the discovery meant finally putting one of the most persistent questions of his life to rest. Yet the resolution was not as straightforward as it might have seemed. The people connected to Chrono Statis still posed a threat, and the investigation exposed another piece of family history that could prove even more difficult for Colter to process.
Russell Shaw Knows Something Colter Doesn’t

Jensen Ackles’ return as Russell became particularly important during the final episodes of Season 3. The brothers reunited to confront the people responsible for exploiting children through the government program, bringing their complicated relationship back to the center of the story.
Their efforts included rescuing two teenagers caught up in the operation. As Colter worked to locate the missing girl, Lola, he uncovered more about the conditions in which the children had been held. The rescue also reinforced the danger posed by the people determined to protect the program.
Russell’s own investigation, however, took a troubling turn. During his confrontation with those connected to the conspiracy, he learned something disturbing about their father and an incident involving Colter when he was a child. The revelation immediately changed Russell’s priorities. Rather than sharing what he had discovered, he decided to keep the information from his younger brother, apparently believing that the truth could hurt Colter or expose him to further danger.
Russell subsequently negotiated a deal with McIntyre (Glenn Morshower), a man connected to the operation. In exchange for undertaking a mission, Russell secured an agreement involving his survival, the removal of evidence surrounding the secret, and a promise that he and Colter would be left alone. Knowing that the threat would not necessarily disappear if McIntyre were killed, Russell agreed to the arrangement. He then asked Reenie to keep Colter from following him, promising that he would eventually explain his actions.
This decision leaves the brothers in a complicated position heading into Season 4. Although they have worked together to uncover the truth about their father, Russell is now carrying information that could fundamentally change Colter’s understanding of his childhood. Ackles is set to return, meaning the mission and the secret behind it remain important pieces of the larger story.
Colter Is Finally Letting People Get Closer
The resolution of his father’s death has also affected Colter’s emotional life. For years, he has maintained a largely solitary existence, traveling across the country to find missing people while keeping his own personal struggles at a distance. With one major mystery behind him, Colter appears more willing to establish meaningful connections. Rather than focusing exclusively on his next assignment, he has begun making room for friendships and activities that have little to do with his work.
One of the clearest examples comes when he brings his father’s old truck to his home base and asks John Keaton (Brent Sexton), a former detective who has become a friend, to help him restore it. The truck has remained untouched since Ashton’s death, making the project an unusually personal undertaking for Colter. It also provides an opportunity for the show to revisit his father’s legacy from a different perspective.
Given the secrets surrounding Ashton, the vehicle could eventually become more than a sentimental reminder of the past. It may contain clues connected to the government program or even information relevant to Russell’s mysterious assignment. For now, its full significance remains uncertain.
What matters most is the change in Colter himself. By inviting Keaton into a space connected to his family, he demonstrates a growing willingness to trust others and share parts of his life that he would once have kept private.

Reenie Greene Is Struggling More Than She Lets On
While Colter has become increasingly open with the people around him, Reenie has been withdrawing into herself. The attorney endured a frightening ordeal in Season 3, including being held at gunpoint and witnessing someone’s death. Although she has continued to work, the experience has left a lasting emotional impact that she has struggled to acknowledge.
Reenie has responded by throwing herself into her professional responsibilities and turning to boxing to manage her emotions. However, the flashbacks she continues to experience suggest that these distractions have not helped her fully process what happened.
Her conversations with Colter also offered a deeper understanding of the person behind her confident professional exterior. Reenie explained that she grew up on Army bases, moving frequently and rarely having the opportunity to establish lasting friendships. She also revealed that she got into trouble during her younger years before being presented with two possible directions for her future. She ultimately chose the path that led her to become a lawyer, helping explain her determination to succeed and her desire to prove herself.
These revelations add complexity to a character who has often been defined by her ability to solve problems and navigate difficult legal situations. Reenie is accustomed to being the person others can rely on, but her recent experiences have exposed vulnerabilities that she cannot simply overcome by working harder.
Her storyline also creates an interesting contrast with Colter’s development. As he becomes more comfortable discussing personal matters, Reenie finds herself avoiding them. Season 4 has an opportunity to explore whether she can finally confront her trauma and allow the people around her to help.
Maxine and Mel Are Expanding Reenie’s Storyline
Reenie’s world became more interesting with the introduction of Maxine, played by Kathleen Robertson, and Melanie “Mel” Day, portrayed by Cassady McClincy Zhang. Maxine first entered the picture as a fellow attorney who hired Reenie to assist with a class-action lawsuit. Their professional partnership took them through a challenging case that ultimately ended in a victory, but the experience also led to a genuine friendship.
For Reenie, that relationship represents an opportunity to build a connection outside her established circle. Maxine offers companionship and professional support, potentially giving the attorney someone with whom she can share more of her personal life.
Robertson is expected to return in Season 4, allowing the series to continue developing their friendship. Maxine’s legal expertise could also prove useful when Colter encounters cases involving powerful individuals, complicated litigation, or organizations attempting to conceal wrongdoing.
Mel, meanwhile, began working as Reenie’s assistant and has since been promoted to the main cast for Season 4. That change suggests the character will have a more prominent presence as the series continues. She also has a painful history of her own. Mel’s mother, an Army logistics officer, died in a suspicious shooting when Mel was just 16. Although the full circumstances surrounding the death remain part of her backstory, the incident provides a foundation for future character development.
What Season 4 Still Needs to Address
Although Season 3 resolved a major mystery, it left several important questions unanswered. Those unresolved threads provide the foundation for the show’s continuing family drama.
Russell’s mission remains one of the biggest concerns. His agreement with McIntyre has placed him in a dangerous position, and his decision to conceal what he learned about their father could have serious consequences for both brothers. The question is not only what Ashton did, but also why Russell believes Colter must never find out. There is also the possibility that Colter’s investigation into his father’s past is not entirely finished. The discovery surrounding Chrono Statis explained much of Ashton’s behavior, but the truck and Russell’s secret suggest that other details could still come to light.
Reenie’s emotional recovery is another storyline worth following. Her determination to keep working has allowed her to maintain a sense of control, but her unresolved trauma continues to affect her. The return of Maxine and Mel could help develop this aspect of the series while giving Reenie opportunities to form new connections.
Meanwhile, Colter’s evolving relationships with Keaton and the people around him raise questions about how much his life might change as he becomes more willing to trust others. His work will undoubtedly continue to take him across the country, but the personal connections he has established could become just as important as the cases he takes on.
Season 4 also brings a production move to Los Angeles, offering a different backdrop for a series built around Colter’s travels through diverse American communities. The new setting fits the show’s premise, which allows the reward seeker to move between cities, small towns, and unfamiliar environments as each case demands.
