Diego Luna is set to direct El Maestro from a screenplay he co-wrote with Diego Rabasa, sources tell Nexus Point News. Prowler Pictures is producing the film. The project is being developed as a Spanish-language film. It remains unclear whether El Maestro will be entirely in Spanish or feature some English dialogue as well.
Filming Could Take Place in Canada
Luna may be heading to Canada to shoot the film, with Saskatchewan currently being considered as a production location. According to information obtained by Nexus Point News, it is very likely filming could begin sometime in 2027. If that schedule holds, audiences will likely have to wait a while before El Maestro makes it to the big screen. Or small screen, as it is not clear whether any streamer is attached to the project.
Plot Details Are Still Under Wraps
So what is El Maestro actually about? That is the one detail everyone involved seems determined to keep quiet. No plot details have surfaced yet, and there are currently no cast members publicly attached to the project. An official release date has not been announced either. With production potentially starting in 2027, a 2028 theatrical release would be a reasonable possibility.
Diego Luna Has Been Directing for Years
Luna’s career goes well beyond Star Wars. He broke through internationally with 2001’s Y tu mamá también and later appeared in projects such as The Terminal, Milk, Elysium, and Narcos: Mexico. Playing Cassian Andor eventually made him one of the most recognizable stars of the modern Star Wars era. But directing is hardly new territory for Luna. He previously helmed the feature films Abel, Cesar Chavez, and Mr. Pig. In 2025, he also began production on A Mouthful of Ash, which he directed, produced, and co-wrote.
Another Personal Project
El Maestro looks set to continue that side of Luna’s career. With Luna directing and sharing screenwriting duties, this is clearly a project he will have a major creative hand in. For now, however, El Maestro remains something of a mystery. We know who is behind it, where it could be filmed, and when cameras may start rolling. What we still do not know is the most interesting part: what story Luna actually wants to tell.
