The Monarch: Legacy of Monsters prequel, currently known as the Untitled Young Lee Shaw spin-off, is set to begin filming in Prague this June.
The series will follow Colonel Lee Shaw, an American Monarch operative, who in 1984 embarks on a covert mission behind enemy lines to stop the Soviets from unleashing a devastating new Titan that is powerful enough to destroy the United States and shift the balance of the Cold War, according to Apple TV.
Wyatt Russell will reprise his role as Lee Shaw in the prequel. Joby Harold, a producer on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, will serve as showrunner and oversee Legendary’s Monsterverse slate for Apple TV. His previous credits include executive producing Emmy nominated series Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as work on John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The Untitled Young Lee Shaw spin-off series will be executive produced by Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, alongside Russell, Chris Black, Kyle Bradstreet, Alex Boden, Max Borenstein, and Andy Goddard. Producers include Kei Banno, Brian Rogers, and Kenji Okuhira, with Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive producing on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character.
Costume designer Emmie Holmes, who worked on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, will return. Holmes’ previous credits include Outer Banks and Swamp Thing.
It remains unclear whether any recurring characters from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will return in the prequel series. The most plausible candidates are Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira) and Dr. Suzuki (Leo Ashizawa), as both characters are alive during this period. However, their involvement has not been confirmed and remains speculative.
Legendary’s Monsterverse has begun with Godzilla in 2014 and has since expanded into film and television. Current series include Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and the upcoming Lee Shaw prequel. The next film installment, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, will star Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Stevens, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo. The film is set to release in theaters March 26, 2027.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is currently streaming on Apple TV. Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the series is produced by Legendary Television, in association with Apple TV. The series stars Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, Wyatt Russell, and Kurt Russell. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters serves both as a prequel and sequel to Kong: Skull Island, following Bill Randa’s past with Keiko Miura and Lee Shaw, and their legacy.
