After nearly two years, Dark Matter is finally opening the Box again. Apple TV’s sci-fi thriller returns for Season 2 on August 28, 2026, picking up after a first season that transformed one man’s regret into a multiversal nightmare. Based on Blake Crouch‘s 2016 novel, the series initially followed the book closely, but Season 2 marks new territory for the television adaptation.
That makes remembering where everyone ended up especially important. By the end of Season 1, there wasn’t just one Jason Dessen, multiple characters had crossed between realities, and Jason, Daniela, and Charlie had abandoned their original world entirely.
Before stepping into another dimension, here’s everything you need to remember from Dark Matter Season 1.
Jason Dessen Was Replaced by Another Version of Himself
At the center of Dark Matter is Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physics professor living in Chicago with his wife, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), and their teenage son, Charlie (Oakes Fegley).
Jason once had the potential to pursue groundbreaking scientific research, but he chose family life instead. His decision becomes especially complicated when his former friend Ryan Holder (Jimmi Simpson) receives recognition for his scientific work, prompting Jason to wonder what his life might have looked like if he had made different choices. Then Jason is abducted.
The person responsible is not a random enemy, but another version of Jason himself. Known as Jason2, this alternate Jason made the opposite choice years earlier. He left Daniela when she became pregnant and dedicated his life to science. With financial support from his wealthy friend Leighton Vance (Dayo Okeniyi), he eventually created the Box, a device capable of allowing people to travel between parallel realities.
But Jason2 eventually became dissatisfied with the life he had chosen. He wanted Daniela and Charlie, so he used the Box to find a version of himself who had them — Jason1 — and stole his life. The problem was that Jason2 had Jason’s face, but he didn’t have Jason1’s memories.
Daniela gradually noticed that something was wrong with her husband. His unfamiliar behavior and gaps in his knowledge became increasingly difficult to explain, particularly when he failed to remember important details about Charlie, including his severe nut allergy.
While Jason2 attempted to maintain his new life, Jason1 found himself trapped in a world where Daniela had never become his wife. His only way home was through the Box.
The Box is the Key to the Multiverse
The Box is the technology that makes Dark Matter‘s multiverse possible. It doesn’t work like a conventional machine with coordinates that let someone select a destination.
After taking a specially developed drug that allows the human mind to tolerate the experience, a traveler enters the Box and encounters an endless corridor filled with doors. Each door can lead to a different reality.
The crucial rule is that the Box responds to the traveler’s mental state. Fear, desperation and other emotions can influence where a person ends up. That means knowing which reality you want isn’t enough — you have to be in the right state of mind to reach it. This explains why Jason’s journey becomes increasingly difficult as his desperation to return to Daniela and Charlie grows.
The realities themselves can also vary dramatically. Jason and Amanda encounter alternate versions of Chicago affected by catastrophes, as well as worlds that look familiar but contain unsettling differences.
There is another important limitation: travelers can only reach realities in which they could have existed. The Box isn’t taking them to completely unrelated alien civilizations. Instead, the characters are essentially moving between different possibilities created by the choices made in their own lives. And those possibilities can be almost endless.
Amanda Helped Jason Find His Way Home
Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga) became Jason’s unlikely partner during his journey through the multiverse. In Jason2’s reality, Amanda was a psychiatrist at Velocity and was romantically involved with him. Once she realized what Jason2 had done — and understood how dangerous Velocity’s security team could be — she chose to help Jason1 escape.
Together, Jason and Amanda traveled through multiple realities while trying to understand how the Box worked and how to reach Jason’s original world. Their journey also revealed that they weren’t the first people to experiment with the technology.
Blair Caplan (Amanda Brugel), who Jason knows in his original reality as Daniela’s lawyer and best friend, had previously entered the Box in another version of herself. Her journey took her to a devastated reality plagued by enormous, deadly creatures.
Eventually, Amanda and Jason discovered a peaceful, highly advanced world that seemed almost ideal. Amanda decided that it was the place where she wanted to stay, while Jason continued his search for his family. That decision becomes particularly important in the Season 1 finale.
Ryan is Connected to the Box, Too
Ryan Holder was initially introduced as Jason’s brilliant friend and former colleague, but his connection to the multiverse became increasingly complicated. Different versions of Ryan exist across the realities. His scientific work is particularly important because he is involved in developing the drug that makes Box travel possible.
Jason2 eventually decided that Ryan knew too much. After manipulating the situation, he stranded one version of Ryan in another reality and attempted to cover his tracks by bringing in a different version of him. But Jason2’s plan didn’t completely work.
In the final moments of Season 1, Ryan appears in the same peaceful world where Amanda has chosen to remain. He approaches her and says that he has been looking for her. Why he was searching for Amanda — and what he intends to do next — is one of Season 2’s biggest unresolved questions.
Jason Finally Made It Home — But He Wasn’t Alone
After everything Jason went through, he eventually returned to his original Chicago. There was just one problem: other Jasons had been created along the way.
Because the multiverse branches according to choices and experiences, Jason’s journey through the Box created numerous versions of himself. Each one had essentially lived through a slightly different version of the same journey, and each believed he was the Jason who deserved to return to Daniela and Charlie. Some were willing to accept that Daniela had chosen the Jason she knew. Others were far more dangerous.
The finale therefore turned Jason’s original problem upside down. He had started the season trying to distinguish himself from Jason2. By the end, there were countless versions of Jason1 who could make the exact same claim. Daniela and Charlie ultimately recognized the Jason they had been searching for. But getting their family back together didn’t mean they could return to normal.
The Dessen Family Left Their Original World
With so many alternate Jasons gathered in their reality, Jason, Daniela and Charlie realized that staying home wasn’t an option. Even though some of the variants were willing to let them go, others had become increasingly violent during their own journeys. Their original world was no longer safe.
Jason2 eventually understood the damage he had caused. Rather than continuing to fight, he helped the family by giving them supplies for another journey through the Box. When Jason, Daniela and Charlie reached the Box, they found a crowd of alternate Jasons waiting for them.
Instead of another confrontation, the variants ultimately allowed the family to leave. But there was one clever twist: they didn’t know where the Dessens were going. Charlie was the one who chose their destination.
Jason and Daniela therefore couldn’t simply pick a familiar reality that their duplicates could anticipate. The family opened a door and stepped into a completely unknown world. The audience never saw what was waiting on the other side. And that is exactly where Season 2 begins.
What Can We Expect From Dark Matter Season 2?
Season 1 was ultimately about Jason’s journey home. Season 2 has a much bigger canvas.
The official premise reveals that the Dessens initially settle into what appears to be a peaceful life in another world, only for circumstances to force them to run once again. Jason’s relationship with the Box becomes increasingly complicated, while Daniela’s growing paranoia threatens the family’s sense of stability.
Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan will attempt to find their way home, while Leighton continues pursuing his vision of creating what he considers a perfect world. Blair, meanwhile, is determined to stop him.
Most importantly, the series is now operating beyond the storyline of Crouch’s original novel. Viewers who read the book no longer have the same roadmap they had during Season 1. There are countless realities to explore, multiple versions of familiar characters still scattered across the multiverse, and unresolved consequences from Jason2’s decision to steal another version of his life.
