One of cinema’s most beloved characters is getting her own origin story. Premiering on Prime Video on July 1, Elle rewinds the clock to explore Elle Woods’ teenage years long before she became the confident Harvard Law student audiences met in Legally Blonde.

Set in the mid-1990s, the coming-of-age prequel follows a younger Elle as she navigates high school, friendships, family, romance, and the experiences that help shape the woman fans already know and love. Produced by Reese Witherspoon through Hello Sunshine, the series was created by Laura Kittrell, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Caroline Dries.

Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the original Legally Blonde, the series has already been renewed for a second season, with production officially underway ahead of its debut.

Before pressing play, here’s everything you need to know about Elle.

What is Elle about?

Elle is a prequel to Legally Blonde, focusing on Elle Woods during her high school years.

According to the official synopsis, the story begins in 1995, when Elle is still discovering who she is while dealing with the challenges of adolescence. Throughout the season, she faces difficult friendships, forbidden romance, and plenty of questionable fashion choices, all while relying on the support of her family.

The series explores the life experiences that gradually transform her into the optimistic, determined, and confident woman introduced in the 2001 film.

Who plays young Elle Woods?

Rising actress Lexi Minetree stars as teenage Elle Woods after earning the role through a nationwide open casting call.

Producer Reese Witherspoon personally shared the casting news with Minetree, welcoming her as the next actress to bring the iconic character to life.

Who else is in the cast?

The series introduces several new characters alongside young Elle.

June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott play Elle’s parents, Eva and Wyatt Woods. Chandler Kinney stars as Kimberly, a senior who isn’t particularly fond of Elle, while Gabrielle Policano plays Liz, described as the “anti-Elle Woods.” Jacob Moskovitz portrays Miles, the school’s star athlete, and Zac Looker appears as Dustin, one of Elle’s classmates who isn’t afraid to challenge authority.

The recurring cast also includes Jessica Belkin as Elle’s best friend Madison, Logan Shroyer as Josh, Danielle Chand as Shannon, Matt Oberg as Principal Anderson, James Van Der Beek as Dean Wilson, and Amy Pietz as Donna.

How is Elle connected to Legally Blonde?

Rather than serving as a direct setup for the events of Legally Blonde, Elle works as a deeper exploration of who Elle Woods is before she becomes the version audiences first meet in the 2001 film.

The series focuses on the formative years that shape her confidence, resilience, and perspective, showing how her teenage experiences gradually build the mindset that later defines her time at Harvard Law School. In that sense, it expands the character’s backstory without relying on the plot of the original film.
