BTS fans are about to witness a deeply personal look at the group’s reunion in BTS: The Return, a feature-length Netflix documentary chronicling the septet’s return to the stage after a multi-year hiatus. The film captures the creation of their latest album, Arirang, and offers a rare glimpse into the challenges, excitement, and brotherhood behind their comeback.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Trailer and Release

The documentary is set to premiere on Netflix on March 27, shortly after the release of Arirang on March 20. A trailer released on March 16 gives viewers a glimpse into BTS’s comeback, following the members through recording sessions, rehearsals, and travels. The footage highlights both the pressures of returning to an industry that moves at lightning speed and the excitement of performing together once more.

RM shares in the trailer, “Trends shift every season. Standing still isn’t an option. And we’re trying to find out what makes us BTS.” Jimin reflects on the reunion with equal warmth: “We are finally back where we’re meant to be,” capturing the sense of relief and anticipation that comes with reconnecting as a group.

The Story Behind the BTS: The Return

Directed by Bao Nguyen, known for The Stringer and The Greatest Night in Pop, the film doesn’t attempt to recount BTS’s entire career. Instead, it focuses on this pivotal moment: the band coming together after completing South Korea’s mandatory military service. Nguyen told Netflix’s Tudum, “I tried to understand what this particular moment meant to them and what story could be found inside that. Observing them, what I kept seeing, just through observation and listening, was a brotherhood formed through creativity and through proximity, through living together, working together. growing up together, and carrying a enormous weight together. They are holding something that I do not think any one person could fully fathom or carry alone. But as OT7, they are able to face it. So the story I found was not just one of fame or success. It was a story about connection, trust, and the bond that allows them to keep evolving and keep returning to one another.”

The documentary begins with a scene familiar to fans: the members on a Los Angeles beach, greeting fans during a livestream. Nguyen explained the choice: “Starting with a moment everyone recognizes gives context, and then we gradually show what exists beyond it. The story isn’t just about the public image—it’s about the layers behind it.“What I liked about starting there is that we begin inside a frame the world already saw, and then the film slowly pulls back to reveal a perspective just outside of it. You realize we are not only watching the public moment, we are watching what surrounds it. That felt like the right way into the story because it signals that the film is interested in what exists just beyond the image people already know.”

The Hiatus and Reunion

BTS’s hiatus began in December 2022 as each member completed their mandatory military service. During this time, some explored solo projects, while others fulfilled their enlistment. Jin and J-Hope returned in 2024, followed by RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook in mid-2025, with Suga completing service on June 21, 2025. The documentary is said to capture the process of reuniting as a full group, balancing the pressures of the comeback with the joy of making music together again.

BTS: The Return provides insight into the group’s creative workflow on Arirang, including studio sessions, rehearsals, and planning. The documentary highlights how the members collaborate and manage responsibilities, showing the organization and coordination that allow BTS to work effectively
