The Kane Chronicles is getting another shot at the screen, and this time as a television series at Disney.
Nexus Point News learned that 20th Television has acquired the rights to Rick Riordan’s The Kane Chronicles back in 2024 and now we can reveal that a series adaptation of the bestselling fantasy trilogy is moving forward in development at Disney.
Riordan and Angela Robinson will create the project at 20th Television for Disney Plus. Robinson has previously directed two episodes of Netflix’s young adult fantasy series Wednesday. Robinson also wrote several episodes of How to Get Away With Murder and True Blood. Sources could not confirm whether Robinson would direct the series, but it seems likely.
The development marks a new chapter for The Kane Chronicles, which previously spent several years at Netflix as a feature-film project. Netflix had acquired the rights with plans to develop the books as a trilogy of movies, but the project ultimately went into turnaround. Riordan confirmed in 2024 that the rights had reverted to him after the Netflix development ended, adding that he and Becky Riordan were exploring other options for the property.
Now, the franchise has landed at 20th Television, with the story being developed in the television space rather than as a series of theatrical films.
Based on Riordan’s three-book series — The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire and The Serpent’s Shadow — The Kane Chronicles follows siblings Carter and Sadie Kane as they discover that the magic of ancient Egypt are very much alive in the modern world. The siblings are descendants of powerful Egyptian pharaohs and become caught up in a conflict involving the Egyptian gods and an ancient force threatening to destroy the world.
The project would give Disney another Riordan adaptation following the success of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which debuted on Disney+ in 2023.
That deal now appears to have taken shape at Disney and The Kane Chronicles is one step closer to coming to our screens.
There are currently no details on casting, episode count or a potential premiere date. The project remains in development, and Disney has not formally announced the series yet.
