There’s a brand new season of Invincible that’s hours away from releasing. The first three seasons have been building up to a pivotal moment in the Invincible storyline: The Invincible War.

It’s finally here, but before we get to see the chaotic brutality that comes from it, we’re going to take a look back at Season 3 and see what Mark (Steven Yeun) has had to deal with. Here’s everything you need to remember from Invincible Season 3 before Season 4 releases.

Oliver Gains Powers

We first got to meet Oliver (Christian Convery) in Season 2 when Invincible met him on the planet Thraxa, learning that his father had a new kid. He brought him to Earth to give him a better life under Andressa’s (Rhea Seehorn) rules, but from Season 2 to Season 3, he had grown rapidly, which is expected from his race, who age fast.

Things started to change around the house when Oliver began getting powers similar to Mark. He became his own superhero: Kid Omni-Man. It wasn’t the best name in the world, but he was a kid who wanted to represent his father in the hopes that he would be able to redeem his father and change the meaning of the mantle.

Mark has a hard time getting Oliver to listen to his instructions, which leads to Oliver flying over to the Missile Silo Base to assist his brother in facing the Mauler Twins (Kevin Michael Richardson). Unfortunately, Oliver kills both of them, and his discussion with Mark after highlights that despite it being an accident, he didn’t feel bad because people killed each other all the time. Oliver gets a stern talking to from Oliver and Debbie (Sandra Oh), where he eventually apologises for his actions.

This is all extremely important for Season 4, as it leads into how Mark begins to deal with criminals and the conflicting moral issues that arise from it.

The Invincible War

Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) has been a recurring and dangerous foe for Mark, and he’s back once again, but this time he has recruited several evil variants of Invincible across the multiverse.

Angstrom and his army of evil Invincibles arrive on Mark’s earth, causing chaos and destruction for three days as Mark and co. try to stop them.

There were a lot of casualties in the war, including Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas) who sacrificed himself, and Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow), Immortal (Ross Marquand), Shapesmith (Ben Schwartz), Black Samson (Khary Payton), Monster Girl (Grey DeLisle) and Business Baby (Grey Griffin) who were all injured in the war. There were some heroes who were also declared missing, such as Darkwing II (Cleveland Berto), who trapped himself in the Shadow-Verse alongside an evil Invincible variant.

Conquest Arrives

There’s no time to waste because not soon after the aftermath of the Invincible War, Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), another strong-willed Viltrumite, arrives. With Mark at rock bottom, Conquest arrives at the perfect time, as he needs something to strike hard after the numerous losses he just suffered from the war.

The fight between Mark and Conquest sends shockwaves through the city as they fight throughout it, causing brutal damage to each other. Both Oliver and Eve later join the fight but are outmatched by Conquest, leading to Eve’s violent death. Don’t worry though, she begins a transformation, completely glowing in pink from head to toe as she blasts a vicious pink energy beam at Conquest, burning his clothes and skin away.

Conquest threatens to ensure that he finishes the job with Eve, which unleashes his rage as Mark gets ahold of him and begins smashing his forehead until his face is completely unrecognisable.

The fight is over with Eve fully recovered and nude on the floor. Mark recovers and attends the funeral of Rex Splode. It’s then discovered that Cecil retrieved Conquest’s body and is holding him captive at the Pentagon, with plans to question him about the Viltrum Empire once he has regained consciousness.

Mark’s Morality

The most important thing to note to prepare yourself for Season 4 isn’t the numerous battles that took place, although they do hold great importance. It’s Mark’s morality. Throughout the season, we’re shown how he struggles with the idea of killing people and if there’s any justifiable reason to kill. We see him with this struggle when he’s pressed with the dilemma of killing a future Immortal, a being who wanted to be killed.

We saw this earlier when Mark had to deal with Oliver killing the Mauler twins and teaching him that it’s wrong just to kill people for the sake of it and that there are other ways to sort out these situations.

This all goes in the bin for Mark post Invincible War and Conquest fight, as the entire world is devastated from the events, countless lives are lost, and all because of him. Mark come extremely close to killing Angstrom, and it’s during this moment you can tell that his morality is shifting from what it once was.

The devastation that came from Conquest’s fight and almost losing both Eve and Oliver was the final straw to make Mark snap, who finally decides that he’ll kill anyone who decides to threaten his family. This all plays a major part in Mark’s character development in Season 4 and is easily one of the highlights of the upcoming season.

Season 4 of Invincible premieres March 18 on Prime Video.
