This review contains minor spoilers for Sorcerer Supreme #4

Since taking up the mantle as Earth’s mystical protector in Sorcerer Supreme #1, the Scarlet Witch has faced an uphill battle to prove herself at every turn. Now Wanda Maximoff is at war. Despite feeling she’s made the right choice for Earth and the magical community, the Vishanti have pulled out all the stops to end her once and for all. And they aren’t above using one of her closest allies and friends to get the job done.
Agatha Harkness has long stood as one of Wanda’s mentors and confidants, but now the two are enemies. Their clash erupts within the Sanctum Sanctorum, where both witches unleash an arsenal of artifacts and arcane might in a struggle for supremacy. Artist Bernard Chang delivers a stunning visual spectacle, distinguishing each spell with intricate and deliberate design while giving the Sanctum a sense of scale and mysticism. Praise to the coloring team as well for elevating the intensity. Especially through the characters’ expressions. Most notably in the eyes, which I kept finding myself coming back to.

The battle escalates in both scale and imagination, stretching from the Sanctum to the Quantum Realm. Along the way, the issue gives us some strong character beats. Orlando particularly highlights the philosophical divide between Wanda and Agatha’s approaches to magic. While the outcome may not be entirely surprising, the emotional weight behind Wanda’s eventual victory and the truth behind Agatha’s actions lands effectively. As expected, it all ties back to the Vishanti, who manifest before Wanda to take matters into their own hands. Without spoiling the resolution, this confrontation may represent Wanda Maximoff at her very best.
In the aftermath, it appears Wanda has begun to win over her doubters. Even Wong, previously skeptical of her ascension, seems to reconsider her place within the Sanctum. But peace is fleeting. The closing pages tease new trouble on the horizon, as Clea Strange may soon arrive bearing urgent matters from the Dark Dimension, a thread that feels like a direct continuation from issue #1.
While I’m no expert on the full legacy of the Sorcerer Supreme, Orlando is clearly positioning Wanda for a compelling tenure. Whether she’s standing against Dormammu or challenging the authority of the Vishanti themselves, she feels firmly rooted at the center of Marvel’s mystical maelstrom and capable of holding that ground. While it remains to be seen if Wanda will retain her new title, I’ve no doubt from what we’ve seen of Sorcerer Supreme so far that the Scarlet Witch will leave an undeniable mark.

Nothing to say about all the flaws in the plot? The biggest one was that Orlando wrote the Vishanti as humanoids when they’re actually noncorporeal deities. Another one was that Orlando didn’t script an actual fight between Oshtur and Wanda.
