This article contains spoilers for St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 14.

With five episodes left of St. Denis Medical Season 2, the series looks to go out on a high note before returning for its third season later in the year. This week’s episode, “Happy Birthday, Matty,” sees Matt’s (Mekki Leeper) first birthday party crashed by rival Chaplain Steve (Stephen Schneider). Elsewhere, Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) decides to “get back out there.”
Joyce has been feeling low since separating from Sanderson (Steve Little). In her words, she’s Stella – and she’s going to get her groove back. Luckily for her, Matt is throwing his birthday party at what she believes is a downtown lounge. Delivering the line of the episode, Joyce proudly announces that Big J is looking for a D (which stands for date). What she doesn’t realise, however, is that Matt’s birthday is actually taking place at a laser lounge. It’s his first birthday party, as they did not celebrate back home.
That detail sets up one of the episode’s best running jokes. Joyce arrives expecting a classy celebration, dressed to impress and committed to flirting her way through the night. Instead, she walks into a neon arcade filled with laser tag gear and children running around. Ron’s (David Alan Grier) advice is simple: say happy birthday, get in a photo that proves you were there, then go home and order Uber Eats. Joyce refuses. Matt looks up to her, and she is determined to support him as a friend. The real crime here is that no one seems to notice how good she looks, except Ron, who points out that she has overdressed for the venue.

Bruce (Josh Lawson) continues to look out for Matt. The party quickly fills with people, leaving Serena (Kahyun Kim) surprised that Matt seems to have so many friends. As it turns out, Bruce blasted the invite across the hospital WhatsApp and promised free food and cash prizes. Josh Lawson continues to play Bruce with an earnestness that balances out the character’s usual selfishness. Season 2 has made him a firm favourite, and that only heightens with each passing week. The lounge quickly fills with colleagues, acquaintances, and people Matt barely knows. This makes Val’s (Kaliko Kauahi) absence even more noticeable.
Serena tries to keep the night special by giving Matt a pair of walkie-talkies as his birthday present. It’s a silly gift, but Matt loves it. That is, until Chaplain Steve shows up. Serena didn’t know Steve might attend, which makes his arrival immediately awkward, especially given that his dislike of Matt is clear. His presence ensures the evening doesn’t stay entirely drama-free. Stephen Schneider plays the man standing between the pairing viewers so desperately want together extremely well. It has never been so easy to hate Steve as it is here.
As the party continues, the episode leans into the hilarity of placing hospital staff in a setting far outside their usual environment. Alex (Allison Tolman) is particularly excited about the laser tag maze, though her enthusiasm quickly gets her into trouble. A brief stint in time out for running around the venue slows her down temporarily, which soon turns into battery pack issues before the first game is even over.

When a second game comes around, she even goes so far as to put her laser tag ambitions aside to help a young child who needs assistance. It’s a fitting reminder that hospital staff never entirely switch off their instinct to care for people, even when they’re off the clock. Tolman proves to be exactly the comedic relief the episode needs.
Serena, in the meantime, tries to balance making sure Matt has a great birthday with managing the increasingly awkward dynamics of the evening. St. Denis Medical continues its slow-burning will-they-won’t-they between Matt and Serena, which ultimately benefits them. The series keeps teasing the possibility that their connection could evolve into something more, and it feels like that moment might come sooner rather than later. Kahyun Kim and Mekki Leeper are excellent together. It’s easy to imagine them cementing themselves among the stronger sitcom pairings NBC has produced. Think Ben and Leslie from Parks and Recreation or Eleanor and Chidi from The Good Place.
Joyce’s mission to “get back out there” also continues throughout the night. The environment may not be what she expected, but she commits to making the most of it. Ron observes from the sidelines while focusing on beating the high score on Space Invaders. David Alan Grier consistently delivers some of the episode’s driest humour, even if it is slightly baffling how little attention he pays to Joyce, given that the show teased something more between them earlier in the season.
Ron was adamant Joyce deserved better than Sanderson, even demonstrating a surprising familiarity with Joyce’s preferences, from her seafood allergy to her favourite restaurant. Grier and Wendi McLendon-Covey have the chemistry to make it work, so it feels like a missed opportunity here.
As the night winds down, the episode finds a sweet closing through Matt and Serena’s walkie-talkies. Serena keeps one of the radios so the pair can talk during shifts at the hospital. She wishes him a happy birthday and says she had a great time. Matt’s delight makes the rest of the night worth it.
“Happy Birthday, Matty” exemplifies the laugh-out-loud comedy and character-led moments that St. Denis Medical has become increasingly confident at delivering. The episode allows the ensemble to play off one another in new ways outside of St. Denis, while still focusing on the relationships at the heart of the show. It’s yet another excellent episode in a strong sophomore season.
